Journal 47: A Day in Your Life

When it comes to poems, people usually think it as a hard task to do and usually tries to avoid it. I think I am not too normal because I sometimes do poetry for fun, just like I read for entertainment.
So here is a poem I wrote, you read it firs then I will tell you about what I was doing.

I wish to be rain
Slight drops of ink marked on the window while I stare
Nice, clean, dry I am
In the humid, painful heaven I suffered
Envying the free particles
Envying the coolness
Envying the peace and quiet
On and on and on psychology
I am bored with a pond of ink
Diving into knowledge
I don’t know how to blink

I hope people can understand what I just wrote and what situation I was in. So I was in the humid, enclose psychology class, the teacher went on and on by himself and I have nothing to do but take some “notes” (I end up with this poem). I was looking out of the window and saw the rain drops sliding down the window, suddenly I have this feeling of wanting to be the rain drop. In the end “I don’t know how to blink”, I describe my pain of trying to stay awake.

Journal 46: Acrostic

Today, I have to write two poems for my journal. The poems have to base on an name, one is my and I pick the other one, the letter of the name have to be the start of every line. Also every line have to be related to the subject. For people like me who have a really long first and last name is pretty bad because I have more work to do.

Here goes my poem for my name:
Jingmin
Ill she is
Not able to speak
Google and facebooking
Maybe that is how ill people recover
Internet is the best pill,
Never too late to take it
Young and fine she is now
At the end of the day
Notice the tiredness, therefore
Good night

The friend I picked is Iris Weng, she is a really funny person, a little cubby, a little short, don’t have good grades, don’t know much, a good friend to talk to, a good person to scorn.

So here goes again, my poem for Iris Weng:
I know someone funny but
Rarely anyone like
Iris
She is a little cubby, a little short
When she wobbles around
Easily getting trick
Never would I say this, but
God, you are hilarious

Journal 45: How Do Images Convey Mood?

Colors is a really important thing when it comes to the point of creating the feeling to other people who don’t know about the situation. Take me for example, the first time I come to this school, I was terriblely scared because the school is 100% matched to what I imaged as the prison. The walls of the school were totally white and blank because it was summer. To match with the white deathly walls, the lights are also white. All the doors are the same, all the hall ways looks exactly alike to me. All those freak me out and I thought I was going to hell.
However, when the school starts and the empty hallway fills with the noise, the dearest sound of friendship, the lonely cafeteria sends out the smells of food, promising happiness to the hungry stomach, the whole school express a source of warmness. Students themselves are the decoration for the once empty, scary hallway. Even the humming of the air conditioner sounds pleasant, because it stands for escape from the despicable heat outside.
The colors, sounds, smells are really important, those factors turns what I once thought was a prison to a school to stay for 4 years.

Journal 44: Images, Emotion, Mood

Out of everything in the classroom, we are supposed to pick an item to write about. I pick the biggest grape possible, so big that no one could swallow. No body would try to do that anyways because it is full of spikes. Special spikes of course, the type that everyone loves. This is probably the only time you will see spikes that people love. The surface of the round item is not smooth nor is it shiny but it is usually the center of attention. There are billions of ways to use this item, no ones knows the “correct” way to do it, so everyone invent their own way. We drop it, hit it, squeeze it, sit on it, lay on it, play with it and many more that I could not name. The item is like a child who is always playful but it is also similar to an old man’s bully. It is the most forgiveful and best listener I ever seen. It always listens and never complains about being the punching bag. Miracles happen on the it, all the anger and stress you had will bounce away when it is around. You! Rolling on the floor all day, I wonder why people still love you, hug you and play with you. You dirty, nudity child.

Journal 43: Elements of Poetry

Some parts in elements of poetry are the same as the elements we use in stories. Things like plot, setting, conflict, character, resolution could all be included in the poem. However there are always things that are different, elements of poetry is not the same as the elements of literature. Poetry has elements such as: rhymes, rhythms, a lot more metaphor and usage of imagery than we will find in other types of writing. Poems, as a type of writing originally come from songs, usually emphasize and re-emphasize on the rhymes and rhythms. While stories usually tells a sequence of events and conflicts that attract readers to read.
A poem name “A Girl” by Ezra Pound describes the girl in detail using metaphors that creates images in reader’s mind while reading. In the poem, the word “girl” is never mention. However it is clear to me that the word tree is used to replace the word girl.  A writer of story would also use imagery but he or she will not use that much of metaphors in the story. The poem also contains the same word choice for the beginning of every sentence and end rhymes are always visible. This is something that a writer of stories will not emphasize on.

Journal 42: Poetry

Poems are often consider as one of the hardest portion in English because it is a from of language for genius. It is really hard to understand because often the world choice is uncommon and the order of the words are irregular. However the poems are easier to read and memorize because there is usually rhyme and patterns in the poem that makes it fun and interesting. Those patterns are the things make poems special but it gives a lot of troubles for the poet. Rhyme, sounds, patters etc. are needed to put into consideration while writing the poem which largely contributes to the hardness of writing a poem. Inspects of all the differences between poem and normal writing, they still have few things in common. Such as they both express meaning in word from and is both invented long ago.
The origin of poem is songs so obviously the poems can express story and songs as any other forms of writing can do. Poems even have the special privilege of switching the order of the words without violating the rules of writing. Made up words and unfinished sentences appear commonly in poems. Recently there are a lot of poets decided to ignore the punctuation in their poems and they get away with it perfectly fine. So poems are really special in all ways.

Journal 41: Analyzing Visuals

On page 648 of our textbook, there is a picture of red dragon with blue, repetitive curve as the background. First thing I notice in the picture is it’s color, the color choice is very vivid and bright. The surface seems rough and hard to me, even though I can’t feel or actually see the painting. The bright color helped convey the message the painter wants to distribute. I think he is trying to emphasize the dragon is a dangerous animal that comes with dark waves. The scale of the dragon and waves are the parts that are repetitive in the image.
On page 649 of our textbook, there are more questions referring to the image on page 648. There are also smaller images that zoom in on certain parts of the dragon image. First, the strong and bright color imminently grabs the viewer’s attention. Blue and red being the only color of the image creates a traditional feeling for the image. Dragon become very outstanding is one other  effect of the two contrasting color. As for the not blended nor hidden lines, it contributes to the 3D feeling of the image. I think the artist put repetitive patterns on the image because he is a bit lazy.

Journal 40: Poetry and Imagination

The passage has a figurative meaning because we naturally sees images in our mind while reading the poem. The poem is illustrating the author’s love for reading or writing poems that it is like the joy he gets while eating something he loves. Our imagination is one of the key thing that makes the world fun! It transform simple and maybe pointless thing to something we laugh at and make jokes about during the spare time.
I personally think poetry is a very hard to understand thing. Although the meanings behind the poem could be very deep and interesting, I don’t like to unscramble words. However I do like the sounds of poems when reading aloud. There may or may not be meanings attached to it but it is okey. It is like listening to music on the subway while you began falling asleep. The words and meanings of the song didn’t matter anymore it is the sound and rhythm that matters.
I had made a poem during class. The idea was from an poem made by Janet Lin who won one of the poetry awards. And here it goes:

Friends for never
That’s when I realize that we are not friends forever,
you are my friend for never.
Betrayal once, twice triple,
mess with my head like riddle.
Are we friends are we not.
Sharpen words like bloody arrow,
Cut through my heart without sorrow.
In the bloodsheds lay,
Trust, faith, and last “hey”
